Of course, things were different than they were in1964; these days LBJ had to give any speeches on military bases because his presence in almost any city in the country would attract rioting anti-war crazies screaming, “Hey! Hey! LBJ! How many kids did you kill today?” Johnson’s beloved Great Society had turned into a giant mess of expensive and wasteful government programs, cursed by the poor as too stingy and badly run and cursed by the middle class as reverse racism and politically protected larceny.
