And there, opposite the glass case with the pistols was another similar case filled with switchblades. There are some moments in a person’s life that just glow with pleasure and wonder and this was one for us. Yes, we would be in other shops like this at other times in our lives but they would just be dusty emporiums filled with merchandise; this was a golden moment. There was a sign on the grubby, much-fingerprint-smeared, fly-specked glass covering the case that read, ‘Swichblads $4’. More affordable than we ever would have a right to dream! And these guys looked eager to sell. No adults to shoo us away saying, “tut tut.”
